Interpreting Division - Tips for Clients
Working with an interpreter requires a unique set of protocols to help ensure that your meetings are a success.
When dealing with interpreters, it is suggested that you:
- Allow for more time
- Introduce the interpreter and explain his/her role
- Allow the interpreter time to ensure that they can understand each other
- Take charge and remain in control of the interview
- Arrange seating to maintain eye contact and facilitate speaking directly to the person
- Talk directly to the person, and address the limited English person ("LEP") directly, in the second person ("you", not "ask him/her...")
- Avoid sidebar discussions with both the interpreter and LEP
- Use short sentences and pause frequently. Most languages do not correspond word for word
- Be attentive when the person responds
- Ask the person to explain what they understood to ensure you were understood
